Join a Community Conversation with Dr. Davarian Baldwin in Durham
Durham, NC — How do colleges and universities like Duke shape local economies, housing, and wages? Join Duke Respect Durham for a Community Conversation with Dr. Davarian Baldwin on Friday, February 21st, at 5 PM at SEEDS (706 Gilbert St, Durham, NC 27701). Community members, organizers, elected officials, etc. are invited.
Dr. Baldwin, author of In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower, studies how universities act as powerful employers and landowners, often creating inequality within the cities they reside in. He will share lessons from the many communities across the country that have successfully fought for property tax-exempt universities to pay their fair share via Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) agreements. Duke Respect Durham, a coalition of over 25 community organizations calling on Duke University and Duke Health to forge a PILOT with our local government, is holding this conversation to discuss how our community build the agreement we deserve with Duke.
Come for the conversation and to learn how to get involved with Duke Respect Durham! Night School Bar facilitator Leigh Campoamor will moderate the discussion with Dr. Baldwin. Free snacks and refreshments will be provided by the People’s Alliance. Dr. Baldwin’s In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower will be available for purchase from The Regulator Bookshop. Childcare, transportation, and Spanish interpretation will be provided (available upon request based on RSVPs). Bring friends and family and learn more about how we can make Duke pay their fair share, and how having a more equal relationship with Duke is possible with the community fighting together.
